Mutant Poppy Morphine FreeComment: This new poppy is already being grown by legal poppy farmers in countries like Australia and India. The problem is that much of the world's illegal plants are being grown in countries like Afghanistan where it is a cash crop that provides poor farmers with a major source of income. Afghanistan has reclaimed its position as the world's biggest producer of raw opium which can be turned into either morphine or heroin. After the overthrow of the Taliban, production surged again in spite of new decrees issued in 2002 by President Karzai banning opium poppy cultivation. Might some Afghanistan farmers be persuaded to grow the new mutant poppy instead? Barbara K.
