Researchers examined abstinence from smoking among 752 people eight years after they had taken part in a 12-week trial of nicotine patches.
Women who have a particular version of the dopamine receptor gene -- dopamine is associated with pleasure and addiction and speeds up the release of nicotine --appeared not benefit as much from using the nicotine patch. Women not carrying this form of the gene and men, irrespective oftheir dopamine receptor gene, had greater success with the nicotine patch.

Comment: When we say "greater success," the results were not that good. No matter which form of the dopamine receptor gene one has, the statistics are discouraging. For women, who wore the patch,"success"ranged from 13 -23%. After 8 years, it was 5 -12%. Only abouthalf of the patch wearers who initially stopped smoking succeeded in remaining smoke-free in the long run.
